Castello di Verduno

As for all the Verduno wineries located in Verduno’s historic centre – even though we are in a castle – there’s always a familiar sense of the past. This is certainly thanks to Gabriella Burlotto but also to my long association with her husband Franco Bianco, which dates back at least to the late 1980s, when I was taking my first steps into the wine world, and he was already bottling his Barbaresco under the Fratelli Bianco label. Sentimentality aside, what matters most to you readers is that this estate’s Barolo with their austere, classic yet never aggressive style, have long been among the benchmarks for the commune. In some vintages, these wines are capable of truly remarkable leaps and bounds, more frequent in recent years thanks in part to the quiet, measured contribution of oenologist Mario Andrion. Last, but not least, the role of Marcella Bianco, daughter of Gabriella and Franco, who is now an established ambassador for both the estate and Barolo in general.

• First vintage bottled: 1967 (under the brand name Dottoressa Lisetta Burlotto).
• In 2022 the small vineyard in the Monvigliero MGA was replanted, and while waiting for it to return to production, Barolo Monvigliero is vinified from purchased grapes.
• Back on the range permanently since the 2013 vintage, after a period when it was produced occasionally, Barolo classico is a blend derived from the MGAs Boscatto, Campasso, Rodasca and Massara.
• Castello di Verduno was the first winery to use the MGA Massara name on a Barolo label. The oldest vintage for which we have certain documentation is 1974, but the marketing of earlier vintages is not ruled out.
